The Southwest contains the most abstract and extreme desert landscapes. The soil in this photo was cryptographic and untouched for several years. I took this photo as a storm was closing in. By the time I broke down my camera, I was already drenched.

Capital Reef is one of my favorite national parks. The sunrise in this photo was spectacular. How lucky I was to be standing in such an amazing place to witness it.

Cave formed from solid ice. Runoff waters flowing underneath a glacier carved a labryinth of tunnels into the ice. Glacial ice absorbs every color except blue which it reflects back. The massive weight from above forces 98% of the oxygen from the ice.

This is one of my top five favorite mountain ranges that I have explored in North America. The apsens are so amazingly pristine and illuminate amazing color in the fall.

Farmers will randomly plant mustard in their orchards to boost the nutrients of the soil that year if needed. Some trees like cherry and peach trees will yeild pink blossoms. I think the pink contrast above the yellow mustard is striking.

An amazing example of geological formations formed over 150 million years ago by complex uplifting and faulting of the region captured in time. The vivid colors were created by extensive erosion exposing minerals in the rock layers that have oxidized.

After getting the idea for this photo I waited for seven months for storms to come through this parched desert region. The Mojave is one of my all time favorite places for black and white photography. I will be back many many more times.
