This is a classic example of the texture of a first generation old growth giant redwood. I wasn't looking for this photo. As I was hiking away from the late afternoon light I noticed the backside of this redwood jump at me. I love this photo.

Wind erosion of desert sandstone exposing layers of sediment deposited over millions of years. The photo reminds me of stretched taffy.

This was one of the most technicolor trees I've ever seen. I tried capturing the entire tree illuminated in literally every shade in the spectrum. I couldn't get it to translate correctly but I did get this shot that captures a slice of its character.
